Leadership Competency Assessment

There are various tests and assessments that can be used to assess a person's competencies or skills. One example is Myers Briggs.

A more sophisticated (and expensive) approach is to utilize skilled professionals as observers of a trainee while s/he undertakes specific tasks, sometimes purposely under stress conditions. In a subsequent debriefing session, the observer shares thoughts with the trainee directly, providing meaningful feedback while the event is fresh in everyone's mind.

Video taping of simulations and/or live situations provides an opportunity to examine a person's behavior and decisions in great detail after the fact. Such sessions can be very useful in allowing a person to see how s/he is perceived from the outside. Given the intrusive nature of videotaping, and the potential sensitivity of people to the subject matter, all records must be closely controlled to ensure they do not become public.
